Mel Barrett began her career in New York City writing screenplay coverage for independent film production companies such as Circle of Confusion before becoming a reality television and commercial producer, a screenwriter, a director, and a video editor in Los Angeles.
Mel has won a Student Academy Award, a New York International Film Festival Screenwriting Award, worked on the production team of an Emmy Award winning docu-reality series for the Discovery Network, and her written works have appeared in such anthologies and publications as, The April Perrenial, The Huffington Post, and GenX: In Our Own Words.
After spending several years working in the studio system in Los Angeles, Mel is back on the east coast where she belongs, is a proud 'Villen of Somerville, Massachusetts, and has returned to her original creative passion, novel writing. Mel has workshopped her novels at Grub Street, The Loft Literary Center, and The Writer's Room of Boston. Most recently her novel, VIRAL, was a juried selection at The Work Conference in New York City and was published in 2016.
She sometimes still dabbles in film and video and is an avid amateur photographer.
